Written memories from Eileen Prosser about living in a prefab in Lower Jackwood Close, Eltham, SE9

  • We moved from Bermondsey into No 10 Lower Jackwood Close in 1962. There were only 5 prefabs left on the estate at the Deansfield school end as all the other prefabs had been cleared and only the concrete bases were left plus the gardens and fences. We finally moved out 3 years later when the surviving 5 prefabs were due to be cleared and the land returned to parkland. It would have been great to have lived there when it was fully occupied as I would guess it had a great community spurt. Still had a great three years there with a park and woods just a few steps from our back door. We were there during the terrible winter of 1962/63 but what a time for kids with a great hill to sledge down and no school !! Happy days and ones I will always remember fondly. Sadly cannot remember the names of the families who occupied the other four prefabs though.

  • My family moved from Lambeth to 59 Lower Jackwood Close SE9 in 1947 when I was 3 months old. My Dad told me about the terrible weather with snow drifts. We lived in our prefab until they were demolished in 1961/62. I remember the Coronation street party and how all 61 families took part. The Jolin, Brooks, Morphy, Antoadiss, Crudge,Perry,Bayldon, Hagetty,Stitson and families plus more names that have vanished to memory.
