Weathershields prototype bungalow
Dame Stephanie Shirley

Dame Stephanie Shirley contacted the Prefab Museum about a photo of a prototype prefab bungalow which she offered to donate. Her foster father worked for Weathershields, a company based in Birmingham which specialised in the manufacture of metal parts.

The prime owner was Mr Bishop (non-executive). The Managing Director during the time I was close was my foster father Hugo Albert Guy Smith who started off as an apprentice. He seemed to be the prime designer of;

  • Hip rings to use on armoured vehicles.
  • Sun shades on car windscreens to protect drivers’ eyes in strong sunlight.
  • Bailey bridges.
  • The first collapsible golf cart called the Robot.
  • He experimented with metal furniture.
  • And continued making metal car parts.
  • And doubtless more ….
